THE AUDACITY OF HOPE, by Barack Obama

I rather enjoyed this book from our President to be. Although in the end it was not as profound or transformational a work as I had initially expected it to be, the book did give a honest and enjoyable glimpse into the mind of Barack - a good mind, a reasonable mind, a fair mind.

What I enjoyed most was one of the earlier chapters in the book where Barack provided a highly informative explanation of how our legislative process works and what makes it so difficult, even for the most honest politician, to stay out of controversy or compromise. Barack's suggestions for how to reform the process so as to minimize the influence of lobbyists was just brilliant. Most importantly, after reading the book, I feel comfortable imagining this man running our country. I think it will be in good hands, in the hands of someone both highly intelligent and possessing modern values mixed with common sense. We will do well with Barack in the highest office.

YOUNGER NEXT YEAR, by Chris Crowley & Henry S. Lodge

I really liked this book and it also annoyed me.
First what was annoying. The target audience of the book is MEN. And unfortunately, it reads exactly like that - like it was written by a man for men. Lot's of pep talk, phrases like "Chin up, old boy" and clever references to the all mighty erection using similes and metaphors. The book very intentionally left out the female reader in its tone and word choice.

The "Ata Boy" tone of the book is unfortunate because the core message of the text has universal implications relevant to men and women. Once you get past the male chum language, you discover a text just jam packed with detailed and interesting information about how exercise effects our physiology. The MAIN IDEA at the heart of this book is - exercise triggers a body's natural regenerative capabilities. Without exercise our bodies are wired toward decay.

The book also contains a great discussion about nutrition. The main intent of this text is to light the fire under your tushy to get you to exercise. And in this the book is VERY effective. Some of the earlier chapters had me practically jumping out of my comfy reading chair wanting to don my exercise garb and run over to the gym. In all, "Younger Next Year" has made in impact in my life in that it has inspired me to re-commit to a routine of more regular exercise.
